Birding

Thanks to the rich variety in preserved habitat, birds and birders sing the praises of Scenic Rivers. At the Homochitto National Forest, for example, more than 30 miles of trails set the stage for a brilliant show, with a cast that includes Swallow Tail Kites, American Kestrels, Brown-headed Nuthatches, Northern Bobwhites, Bachman’s Sparrows, Prairie Warblers and even a healthy population of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Bald Eagles have also begun to nest at Lake Okhissa.

Birding enthusiasts interested in experiencing the many wonderful bird families in Walthall County have plenty to see, as our county is know to have over 300 species of birds.  Many of the local parks, rivers, creeks, and lakes are great places to visit for a glimpse of interesting birds and other beautiful wildlife.  If you are planning a birding outing in Walthall County, stop by one of our Birdwatching Locations.   We hope you will spot and enjoy some of the many family of birds such as Buntings, Eagles, Kittiwakes, Goshawk, Kestrel, Woodpeckers, or Yellowthroat in Walthall County.  Walker's Bridge is profiled on the United States Geological Service (USGS) Progress Topological map and considered a top location for bird watching in the State of Mississippi.

Founded in 1965 by the late Sara and Frank Gladney and now managed by the John James Audubon Foundation, the Gloster Arboretum has 400 carefully preserved acres of prime birding habitat.  Aloft among the many magnificent native plant species found in Mississippi such as the beech, magnolias, stewartia and mountain laurel, visitors can find many of the native and migrating bird species that call the preserve home.  Click Here for a look at the Gloster Arboretum brochure as well as a map of the preserve.
