Locations

The southwest part of the state provides excellent opportunities for everything from trophy bream, crappie and largemouth bass to some of the best cat fishing in the south. The Southwest District Fisheries group provides the management expertise to insure balanced fish populations, suitable habitat and the proper water quality to provide anglers with enjoyable experiences while using Mississippi's resources.

Okhissa Lake

Lake Okhissa, a 1,100-acre reservoir lake located in Franklin County, is tucked inside the Homochitto National Forest. A fairly new lake, Okhissa has plenty of deep water and flooded timber. The bass generally prefer to hold in the brush, especially in the winter months. When the water starts to get cold and the bass move out to their winter habitat, they will begin grouping into bigger schools.

The state put some F1 hybrid bass in this lake, and these bass grow quickly and are very aggressive. Once you figure out the migration pattern of the bass, you usually can find fish at those same locations for several days.

Lake Tangipahoa

Lake Tangipahoa, located at Percy Quin State Park, is a 700 acre fresh water lake ideal for fishing and water sports. The Lake is stocked with bass, bream, catfish and crappie. A Mississippi fishing license is required for all persons between the ages of 16 and 65 and may be purchased at the park office for a nominal fee. A fish cleaning station, with stainless steel sinks and fillet boards, is available for use at no charge.

Boat Launching
A boat launch is available on Lake Tangipahoa for a nominal fee.
• Boat Launch $7 per person
• Boat Launch annual $102
• Marina $300 annual - all slips

Clear Springs

Clear Springs Lake is a reservoir located just 8.7 miles from Bude, in Franklin County near Suffolk, Miss. Hidden deep in the Homochitto National Forest amid the pine trees and hills of rural southwest Miss, the 24-acre spring-fed lake offers swimming and good fishing.

Fishermen will find a variety of fish including largemouth bass, bluegill and crappie. If all goes well, the bream will be hooked by your grubs, the crappie will be biting your minnows and the largemouth will be grabbing your maggots. Clear Springs has 22 RV sites with water and electric hook-ups, as well as tent sites and primitive camping areas. There are two bathhouses with clean restrooms and wheelchair accessible showers.

Bogue Chitto

The Bogue Chitto River derives its name from "bok chito", meaning big creek in Choctaw. The Bogue Chitto River rises in several small streams around Brookhaven, Mississippi. The two main branches, the East and West Bogue Chitto Rivers come together a few miles south of Brookhaven to form the main stem. The river flows southward, near McComb, Mississippi, then gradually bends toward the southeast, entering Louisiana, and finally flows into the West Pearl River Canal a few miles south of Bogalusa.

This river is an excellent example of a southern forest/swamp river, with fairly easy access and nice gravel sandbars throughout most of its course. The river is subject to quick rises and falls associated with rain events. A river gage reading at the Tylertown gage between 6 and 8 feet is typical for summertime.

Fly fishing or using a small spinner bait or tube jig may net fish in areas where downed trees or logs are found in the middle of the river. These are typical areas for fish to congregate.

Florescent greenish yellow color artificial bait is popular among anglers on the river. Also a plain black jig works well. Shiners and worms work well under a bobber as long as you stand up river and allow the current to float your bobber downstream to the underwater trees.

Lake Mary

Lake Mary is a beautiful oxbow lake located in the western part of Wilkinson County, MS. Stocked with large mouthed bass, channel cat, blue gill and croppie, visit Lake Mary for some of the best fishing around!

Lake Walthall

At Lake Walthall  Bass anglers report the bite is good early & late in the day using mainly soft plastics either Texas or Carolina-rigged and fished along main lake points in 5 to 10 ft. of water. Bream anglers report the bite is best with the full moon when using crickets in 4 to 8 ft. of water around brushtops.
