Hiking

 

The trails that crisscross the Scenic Rivers area offer hikers of every skill level an opportunity to discover the path less traveled. Many of the hiking areas also offer ample opportunity for canoeing, swimming, camping, and fishing. Some of the areas higher elevations provide a beautiful backdrop for any hiker feeling up to a challenge.

All visitors really need for a spectacular journey is often a good pair of boots, a compass and a canteen of water to get out there and start exploring all that mother nature has to offer.

Ethel Stratton Vance Natural Area

Ethel Vance Natural Area is located on the banks of the West Fork Amite River in the extreme southwest portion of the state. Run by the city of Liberty, the seat of Amite County, this park features 10 miles of singletrack trails, popular with mountain biking.

A well- marked nature trail eight miles (four miles wooded and four miles paved) that circles Lake Tangipahoa and affords observation opportunities of wildlife and plants.

Bogue Chitto Water Park

Explore the woods by hiking the trails of Bogue Chitto Water Park. Trails are open year round offering everyone a pleasant walk in the woods.  This hike travels 1.7 total miles through the woods and wetlands along the Bogue Chitto River with waterfalls, swamps, and vistas all packed into one trek. It consists of two loops, one of which travels on bluffs overlooking the Bogue Chitto and another which bisects west.

The Clark Creek Natural Area located in the Scenic Rivers region of southwest Mississippi has over 700 of the most beautiful acres in the state.  This natural area has over 50 waterfalls ranging in heights from 10-30 feet.  These waterfalls and many other wildlife viewing opportunities exist along a 6 mile trail that runs through the breathtaking landscape.

Gloster Arboretum

Founded in 1965 by the late Sara and Frank Gladney and now managed by the John James Audubon Foundation, the Gloster Arboretum has 400 carefully preserved acres of prime birding habitat.  Aloft among the many magnificent native plant species found in Mississippi such as the beech, magnolias, stewartia and mountain laurel, visitors can find many of the native and migrating bird species that call the preserve home.
